Despite being a key sector of the economy, Cameroon’s agriculture struggles to modernize due to several inconsistencies in its management and organization.
This is largely based on subsistence logic, where production is mainly for personal consumption. It limits industrialization and prevents farmers from generating substantial income. Additionally, the lack of effective planning results in unstable agricultural policies that are often implemented without proper follow-up or adaptation to local realities.
Moreover, low mechanization and poor resources management hinder productivity. Traditional farming techniques dominate, modern equipment remains inaccessible, and storage infrastructure is inadequate, leading to significant post-harvest losses. Furthermore, an inefficient marketing system forces farmers to sell at low prices, while the country continues to rely on food import.
Finally, the agriculture sector struggles to attract young people due to a lack of incentives and financial support. However, integrating new technologies and providing better assistance could make agriculture more profitable and dynamic.
Then, to overcome these challenges, all of us must adopt a more strategic approach by promoting modernization, mechanization, and better market structuring. A deep reform is necessary to ensure the sector’s competitiveness and sustainability.
